Not Just Another Day

It’s been a while since I last posted, and to be honest, it’s been a rough couple of weeks.

Two weekends in a row, I found myself in the emergency room. The first trip was due to respiratory issues that turned into a respiratory infection. I’m currently treating that with antibiotics and working my way back. Then, just as I thought I was turning a corner, the following weekend brought something completely different—a fall in the bathroom that ended with me hitting my head on the tile and blood coming out of my ear. No fun, to say the least.

I’m still in recovery mode, but I’m doing okay.

In the middle of all that, life kept moving—and yesterday, April 19th, was my birthday.

I told a few people last week that it was “just another day.” I’ve probably said that before in past years, and if I’m being honest, I didn’t think I really meant it this time either. But looking back now, especially after Saturday night, I can say that it definitely wasn’t just another day.

Twelve of my friends showed up to celebrate with me for what we’ve come to call the 5th Annual “Frost Fest.” And while it may have been a little more mellow than years past, it didn’t take away from how meaningful it was. Sitting there, surrounded by close friends—even if only for a few hours—was something special. It reminded me that birthdays aren’t just dates on a calendar. They’re a reason to show up, to connect, and to celebrate life together.

And we did exactly that. We had a damn good time.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who reached out for my birthday—whether it was on social media, in person, through a text, or a phone call. It truly meant a lot and didn’t go unnoticed.

On another positive note, we’ve recently brought on a caregiver who’s with me five hours a day, Monday through Friday. It’s been a big adjustment, but a really good one. Having that extra help with day-to-day things has made a real difference, and so far, it’s working out great.

I wanted to share this update not just to keep everyone in the loop on where things stand with my health, but also to give a real glimpse into what living with ALS can look like—some tough moments, some unexpected setbacks, but also moments that remind you what really matters.

So here’s my takeaway this week: celebrate your birthday.

Not halfway. Not like it’s “just another day.” Celebrate it in style. Whether it’s big or small, loud or mellow, make it count. It’s a day that’s about you—or about someone you care about—and that’s always worth showing up for.

More to come soon.
